Snow Flower and the Secret Fan by Lisa See - available to Genoa Branch Library

This book was recommended to me by one of the gals in the Genoa Library morning book discussion group.   This historical fiction follows the secret lives of Chinese women in the nineteenth century.  These women endured feet binding, arranged marriages, and isolation in their difficult lives.  To celebrate joyous occassions or sorrowful times, the women composed songs and stories they shared with one another.  They also had a secret language called nu shu (women's writing.)  Women could embroider messages on handkerchiefs or paint them on fans which could then be delivered to other women.  This book is a fascinating look into the lives of these brave women and the many hardships they endured.
This is a Mimi recommended book!
